I never mentioned I was funny... didn't I? Well, there's a reason for that. :-P
The Audies took place a couple of weeks ago in Washington DC, and there were some great works honored.
SFF Audio did all the work for me in highlighting some of the winners, such as HHG: Tertiary Phase in the Sci-Fi category, Around the World In 80 Day in Classics, and The Sherlock Holmes Theatre for best Audio Drama.

Their .pdf of the winners (with reviews and audio clips) was AWESOME to play with!

There's a reason why cell rhymes with hell.

Stephen King's latest book is a return to form for this master of horror. In it, everyone with a cell phone goes stark raving mad after they receive some kind of pulse through their cell. The pulse, likely sent by terrorists, wipes the victims' minds clean. This story takes no time to get started. Within the first few minutes, you are drawn into this nightmare scenario, steeped in gore and horror.

The main character, Clayton Riddell, finds himself in Boston when the pulse drives the majority of people biting, scratching, and murderously mad. He is joined by a band of likable characters as they set off to get out of Boston. Meanwhile the victims of the pulse start behaving more like Zombies and start flocking together and evolving with even more unexpected behavior.

Texas Radio is just Schlocking!

This is the first (chronologically) of three plays that D.B. Humphries (Columbia Audio Theatre and Schlock Audio Theatre) and Richard Frohlich collaborated on about the life and spirit of Annie Oakley.
"The Match" is based on how Annie Oakley met and bested her future husband, Frank Butler at a Thanksgiving shooting match in Ohio.

This play was recorded April and May 2004 in front of a studio audience in Arlington and Fort Worth Texas. It was produced by Shannan Frohlich and the Texas Radio Theatre Company. Directed and Engineered by Richard Frohlich.


The Texas Radio Theatre Company is dedicated to preserving the art of audio theatre where audience members are invited to create the story's imagery within their own mind.

In 1977, NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft to explore the outer planets of the solar system. (Seen here, Jupiter with Io and Europa as photographed by Voyager 1 on February 13, 1979. Link) Nearly three decades later, both probes are still sending data back home as they're hurtling toward the edge of our solar system. (Previous BB post about Voyager here.) Ed Stone has been the project scientist since the beginning. This week, he was interviewed on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Podcast. From the transcript:

Narrator: Okay, let me just go back a bit, and again, you have 30 years of these two amazing spacecraft. This is a tough question for you, I'm sure, but do you have some highlights you can rattle off, some of the most important things you've learned in that time or some of the most exciting discoveries for you.

Stone: Well, generally the most important thing we learned is how diverse the bodies of the solar system are. Each one is unique and that's because they've had a different history, different evolution. Jupiter, with it's great red spot is just the largest of dozens of giant hurricane-like storm systems. And two of Jupiter's moons, Io, has a 100 times more volcanic activity than Earth. Europa has an ice crust probably on the liquid water ocean. On to Saturn, we've found Saturn's rings are riddled with wakes from moons, which are orbiting inside the rings and outside the rings. And there is a moon there called Enceladus, which is the whitest, brightest object in the solar system and has a very fresh surface. And there's the moon Titan, which has an atmosphere in which liquid natural gas rains on the surface. On to Uranus, where we found the magnetic pole down near its equator, and we found a moon, although it was only 300 miles across, it's one of the most complex surfaces we've yet seen. And on to Neptune, the furthest planet from the sun that we've visited, yet it has the fastest winds, with the least energy from the sun to dry them, and its moon Triton, 40 degrees above absolute zero, yet we found geysers erupting from its polar ice cap.

--It's about 15 minutes long... but the dimensions are timeless...

Canada’s first comprehensive podcasting survey is underway, and is looking for input.

The study is aimed at discovering what is happening with podcasting in Canada; audience sizes and characteristics, popular podcasts and topics, audience demographics, and more.

To participate in the survey and to be entitled to receive a highlighted summary of the results, visit the Canadian Podcast Listeners' Survey website. The survey will be open until May 26, 2006.

Toronto-based Sequentia Communications and Caprica Interacitve Marketing Inc. have joined forces to launch this podcast listeners’ survey. All of the findings will be part of a whitepaper on Canadian podcasting habits and audience size, to be released in June 2006.

The goal of this survey and its findings are to better understand the growth of podcasting in Canada and how quickly Canadians are adopting this new form of technology.

Day of the Dead- a tribute to New Orleans

Wow. If you're into mythology (and really who isn't?) I would journey to New Orleans with Frederick Greenhalgh and his well-done interpretation of the Orpheus myth as told in "Day of the Dead":

""Day of the Dead" is a story inspired by the myth of Orpheus, telling of a young man's journeys in New Orleans in search of his missing lover. But all is not as it seems in this land of dreams, and he instead finds something he never expected--himself."

I'm halfway through it and well, wow! Great story and sound (the guitar is awesome!), and if you've got a little time to read, an excellent treatise about what sparked the idea, the myth itself, and some New Orleans background.

"Between my personal experiences there, my cursory knowledge of the cityÂ’s history, and the blunt facts of the geography, I had developed the idea of New Orleans as an underworld-like place. Ignoring the fact that the city was presently submerged underwater, I was more interested in all that had occurred prior to the hurricane (this, of course, being my own frame of reference). New Orleans, to me, was always on the brink of another world... A place of mysteries and majesty, of accidental beauty, of juxtapositions between ebullience and savagery, life and death. A place that tittered on oblivion and danced there joyfully. It is a place that is unapologetically itself."

A Panda on a Ghost Ship

UPDATE: LOLOLOLOL!! Oh that was a great episode! Seriously, I want the inside story of what Panda and Kit were doing for 4 hours in a broom closet (and not just in her devious little mind!).
Oh- oh - OH! I SO need to get me some of that knockout gas, because there are just some days with a couple extra whiny children... heeheeee...

Can you be gritty and sell cosmetics?

Because that is what Texas Radio Theatre is implying with their description of Jack Hardcastle:

"Jack Hardcastle is a hard-boiled, gritty cosmetics salesman who owns a shop that's open 24 hours - providing health and beauty aids to a city that pretends it doesn't care."

And on top of THAT- he's a detective. Gumshoe, informer, nark, peeper, and all the other words thesaurus.com gave me! And it's great dialogue... double entendre's galore and great beauty tips as well!

This particular show was just made available for podcast, and recorded February 2005. "Jack finds himself in the middle of a twisty turny murdery mystery surrounding a sacred cold cream and the supernatural powers it might have."

Do I even have to mention where I first heard a Hardcastle story? But now, you can subscribe to their feed, and get these, as well as all of the great productions by Texas Radio!

Schedule Up for Podcast Expo

I'm happy and sad. Although I'm attending the Expo, it seems since I can't fork over the cash, I can't attend all the awesome sessions they are going to have! Hopefully they will podcast the sessions so I can hear them later.. ;-)

Still worth it to go however, and meet all the people I've been listening to for over a year now!

The War on Podcasting

Kay, this was just too funny and slightly disturbing NOT to post. Stick this in the "only in America" category. I started reading this bit from Podcasting News, and since it had the political spin to it, I, being the slightly political person that I am, HAD to investigate further.

Well- OMFG! Shelly The Republican's blog had some interesting things to say about those bastions of liberal brainwashing known to us as podcasts:

"And now just as television is safe again, a new danger has raised it's demonic head: Invented by the Apple Computer company, the iPod is a device for receiving coded transmissions called "Podcasts". The iPod was originally marketed as a fashion accessory, and it initially became popular amongst Blue-State "metrosexual" communities."

Coded transmissions? Oh- it gets better:

"We all know that science fiction is a dangerously corrupting influence on young minds. Science fiction novels can make children nervous and excitable. I have heard many cases of science fiction addicts rejecting authority and embracing alternative lifestyles, but how much worse could a science fiction podcast be?"

A lot worse, according to the site. Citing the episode My Friend is a Lesbian Zombie, Escape Pod is called "the start of a slippery-slope towards eternal damnation."

The site even gives the podcast a CAP Entertainment Media Analysis report, rating it a devilish 8.1 out of 100:

So distraught are they about these evils, they wrote a second entry, with more information about these podcasts, their CAP reports, and how they reach into your children's brains, wrap their hands around it, and proceed to expand the mind....

I am going to assume that this is all tongue-in-cheek- but I can't help but wonder just who may take this seriously. (One word of advice for Shelley and her fellow crusaders: if you're going to have a campaign with a petition for people to sign, make sure you spell campaign correctly. You wouldn't want anyone to laugh you off as a nut job, eh?)

OMFG! I'd love to know what you all think about this one- is this for real??? And has anyone told Escape Pod? Steve must be getting a kick out of this!

Well phone calls count as audio!

And some people are VERY addicted to talking on the phone! (Such as my almost 9-year-old daughter.)

Skype made a cool announcement yesterday:

San Jose, CA, May 15, 2006 – Skype®, the global Internet communications company, today announced that all US and Canadian-based Skype customers can now make free SkypeOut™ calls to traditional landline and mobile phones in the US and Canada. Previously, Skype users in both countries were required to pay for Skype calls from their PCs to traditional telephones. Free SkypeOut calls to the US or Canada will be available to US and Canadian-based Skype users until the end of the year.

So- I'll be expecting my phone calls from Decoder Ring and All Axis Radio any time now... as I don't have Skype. ;-)

Got the podcast up for this week's re-run of Sonic Society.. Prometheus Theatre and the first of their Arbiter Chronicles. Then, an interview with the writers and cast. It was a fun interview, sounds like they all had fun chatting. Then another Montage Theatre sketch, and the next episode of Robotz.

Like Mixtapes for Podcasts

Collectik is a new site for organizing podcasts and online media that is descibed as "like mixtapes for podcasts."

The sites lets users make a collection of podcast, select episodes to add to a playlist, and then share playlists for subscribing to with iTunes, Juice and other podcast software.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

So every time I would listen to that old REM song, I would always wonder, "Who the hell is Kenneth, anyway?" Well you know there is actually an explaination.

This was good listening. I'll let Rick from Variant Frequencies tell you about the episodes of The Failed Cities Monologues I listened to- which were excellent!:


The Failed Cities Monologues is a special feature on Variant Frequencies, an ongoing story told serially from the perspective of the characters, in the form of monologues given by each. I asked Matt about the title.

"I wrote a line in my notes early on I wanted to incorporate into the prose later. About the fool's gold shine of a failed city. Failed City stuck in my head. Then I realized that they've failed in different ways on both sides of the river, and the story is about both cities."

"It really started with 'Steel Gospel' which I wrote as a stand alone short story about the street preachers," Matt said. "A while later I came up with The Feral Twins all on their own, and I thought maybe I could combine the two and probably a third character and write a book that was kind of like Sin City in novel form, changing perspectives. I start working on it, and as I did I came up with more and more characters to write from, and the style, particularly with Ferus, took on this kind of Tennessee Williams quality I liked.

"Then I sent 'Steel Gospel' to a webzine. The editor really liked it, but rejected it because he felt it didn't have a complete story arc. And he was right. He suggested I open it up into a novel, which I'd already been thinking about. And at the same time we'd started the podcast, so all that meshed in my head and I had the idea to tell a story monologue form. Take out the prose elements and the dialogue and do it that way."

Asked if he planned a book written the same way, all in monologue form, Matt replied, "Well, I think by the time I'm done with them all it'll be a book. I was also thinking it'd be interesting as a stage play."

So does he have a clear idea of how many characters, and how many monologues it'll end up with?

"There are eight characters right now, and more might materialize or gain their own perspectives as I go. Between 20 and 30 monologues, maybe. Each character will do two or three."

Ethan is the first installment of the Failed City Monologues, now available to download. Looking ahead, next we'll meet the brother and sister assassins, the Feral twins: loyal only to each other, lethal to everyone else.

Damn.. I'm slipping in my almost old age... seems Scott at SFF Audio beat me to what is in store for the season finale of Sonic Society. So, since he so graciously did all the work for me this week, I'll let him tell you what's in store for us:


Willamette Radio Workshop returns to the The Sonic Society to close out their wildly successful inaugural season with the award winning production of Archibald Macleish's "The Fall of the City". A verse drama originally commissioned for the Columbia Workshop (the inspiration for WRW) in 1937. You won't believe it's only 30 minutes long.

A note for The Sonic Society regulars, WRW doesn't have podcast rights for "Fall of the City", so the final Society podcast will have a Texas Radio Theater episode.

It's always bittersweet when seasons come to an end, but rest assured they will not miss a beat as they continue the podcast weekly, beginning with the very first episode. I don't believe the first episodes were ever podcast, so those who joined the Society later on will be able to catch up on what they missed. :-)

On a personal note, I just have to say that I am in complete awe of what I've seen evolve over the past 33 weeks. I don't think there was any blood, but plenty of sweat and tears- and plenty of love for audio drama- went into this endeavour, and it was all done for addicts like you, me, and most certainly Jack and Andrew, who must be the biggest addicts of us all. Congratulations my friends on an astounding first season! XOXOXOXO

You have an 8th of a second to guess where I first heard about BK and her cast of merry experimental audio makers. I feel just awful that I have not yet given her a blog moment all her own to bask in, so I'll try to make this one exceptional (as her work is) to make up for the lack of attention (am I kissing enough butt here?)

This particular element has an Earth and Sky-ish, tongue and cheeky feel. It is a cross between a "B" rated horror movie, (should Ed Wood have written for radio) and an NPR "World News" assignment.

**The characters are fictional, and were created to protect the innocent. ( Parents should listen before exposing their children to the workings of this piece) !

DRE ROTC VIP!

Heeheee... did I use enough acronyms there? Translation: Dream Realm Enterprises Robotz of the Company Very Important Production! However, it's really a bit of a spin-off of the serial itself, and the third installment of Celena's Dreams, "Squiglies":


"Where do all the misfits of the galaxy go? Those the Company
("Praise the Company") have no use for. Where is there a port of call
for those who have no better place to be than out on the very rim of
civilized space? A place that is either out of reach, or at the very
least, so out of touch the Company ("Praise the Company") could care
less. Why, it's a crashed space craft called the S.S. Squig and it's
motley crew of humans, botz and ghostly apparitions.

Wait. There's a crew on board this crashed space ship, you say? What?
How? Why? It's simple. The ship is fine. It's just fine. It may never
fly again, because it's somehow been fused to a lonely asteroid in
the middle of deep space, but there really are worse places to be.
It's fine. No one really knows what happened to the original crew.
But Captain Zandra Sladen and her staff really don't care about the
history of the Squig. It simply serves as a place of business. A
place where those who haven't got homes can come and... eat a good
meal (well okay, a mediocre meal at best), gamble their lives away,
drink themselves into oblivion, or even refuel on their way to... who
knows where? Nothing really all that exciting happens on the Squig,
well nothing that anyone has ever really made that much fuss about.
So, as Captain Sladen is often heard saying, "it's just another day
aboard the S.S. Squig". Won't you visit us for a while?" -- The Non-

What is it about Canada?

Great radio drama. Awesome podcasts. The best independent music I've ever heard. When the International News Network was still around, it was the ONLY thing I watched for news, and it was all CBC.

So when I saw this- 22 CBC shows offered on podcast... well I just about had another audiogasm.

I'm sitting here subscribing like a crazy-girl... and trying to figure out what I'll listen to first! Unfortunately this addict has been a very bad girl and not been doing alot of listening lately. I'll have to get cracking!

Boston Symphony Orchestra Intros Podcast

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has created a podcast and video podcast that offers lectures and musical excerpts from the BSO's two-year long Beethoven/Schoenberg series.

The podcast episodes, which range from 1 to 5 minutes in length, look at important works by each composer.

The BSO's Beethoven/Schoenberg series, conducted by music director James Levine, began this past winter with performances of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9, Schoenberg's Gurrelieder and Pierrot Lunaire, and other works. It concludes next season.

Plug in any USB devices storing MP3 music files, and the glowing orb will change color along with the music, “giving you great joy all day long”, according to the company.

Whether it is an USB pen drive, a MP3 player or an USB card reader, you can simply “plug and play”. The MobiNote Hipper 100 plays out MP3 music files directly, so no additional device, such as a computer or external speaker, is not necessary.

According to the company, “MobiNote Hipper 100 has also been positioned as a Mood Creator”. It is a combination of a MP3 player, a speaker and LED light, which changes to 10 colors with different beats and rhythms automatically detected by the built-in MP3 audio chip."

Oh how how HOW did we ever live without all these wonderful toys??

On a Witchhunt in Space

OK, well.. not really. We flashback to Episode 2 of Sonic Society in their podcast, we go back to Shadowlands Theatre, and then even FURTHER to a time of witchhunts and inquisitions*... then spring to the present for a chat with Jerry Robbins of Colonial Radio. We then move forward in time and listen to episode 2 of Robotz of the Company. Meshed within are a couple cool promos!

*If you haven't heard this one.. I suggest you do. How often do you get to hear the host of a show being tortured? And it's quite believable- they must have chained Jack's butt in the studio closet with no food or water for three days before recording (really, I wouldn't put it past Andrew). This is one of my favorite Shadowlands plays, although by far not my favorite sin. ;-)
