I'm going back to my book! Within 4 pages all hell broke loose- OMFG! Podcasting Inefficient?

I found this blog entry through Podcasting News, and I could totally see it spurring yet another debate on the value of podcasting.

Peter Davis says on his site that, "In the time I can listen to an average podcast, I could have caught up on my 50 favorite blogs, or read a chapter in a book, or read the latest issue of Red Herring magazine. I do read super fast. ItÂ’s a habit I learned as a grad student. You learn to read fast in grad school, or you get crap for grades. Podcasts deliver information slowly."

Well, I think it all depends on when you listen to podcasts. For instance, I started listening to 7th Son while my parents were here last week and I couldn't sleep, but couldn't come down and be on the 'puter, and didn't feel like reading or watching the tele. I know that Jack over at the Sonic Society has his own time that he listens to podcasts.

It also depends on what you listen to as well. After all, you can't get things like this, this, this, or this from a book, reading on the internet, or the television. However, though I listen to alot of political podcasts, I still prefer to read as well.

Again it's suggested that podcasting is just another bubble that will eventually burst, and I certainly do not see that happening at all. When people say that- I always get angry and want to rant in a podcast about it. Hey- maybe I will sometime! :-D

Anyone care to weigh in?

Perfect way to deal with "Panda withdrawal"

Why, there IS justice in the world!

OK, I have no clue what that means. Methinks the sun fried my brain today, it was 111 degrees! (That would be like, what? 44 degrees celsius to you uh, non-American folk? And I was outside ALL afternoon...disintegrating. Seriously, they should have handed me a loofah and some soap because I might have well taken a bath, the pool water was so warm.)

But I digress... Decoder Ring Theatre is switching gears for the summer with new episodes of Black Jack Justice- now through October! I can't think of a better way to deal with the long, long, LONG wait for new Red Panda episodes.

Well, other than listening to all of them over again, I suppose. (fried, I tell you- FRIED!)

Mordecai Brasseau had been nothing but bad luck for Jack Justice Investigations since the first time he walked through the door. A nice man, but a jinx - quite possibly the unluckiest man in the world. Each time Jack and Trixie took on a case for him, they swore it would be the last. Sooner or later they had to be right... and the registered letter inviting them to the reading of Mordecai's will suggested that time had finally come.... Or, maybe not.

Podcasting on a Presidential Level

Will the Next President be a Podcaster?

John_Edwards_Podcast.jpgIt's looking more and more like podcasting will play a big part in the next US presidential election. Politicians are treating bloggers seriously, politicians are podcasting and political sites are adding podcasts to their offerings.

An example of this trend is the announcement that Senator John Edwards has signed on to be the keynote speaker at Gnomedex 6, being held in Seattle June 29-July 1st. The senator is a long-standing supporter of technology, including podcasting and blogging, and has pioneered political podcasting, creating both audio and video podcasts.

"Every year, we wonder how we're going to top ourselves," notes the Gnomedex announcement. "Sentator Edwards will quickly turn his time over to the Gnomedex audience, fielding questions and fostering discussion over how technology could and should play a role in our world."

Considering the high profile that Edwards has created for his One America Committee podcasts, it's likely that other presidential candidates will be podcasting, too.

Another politicans' podcast
...And another cool cast I found while searching

Can't believe I missed this!

Better late than never- this episode of Small World Podcast was from June 7th, but I FINALLY got to listening to it, (yay parents being here and less computer time!! I have been catching up on my podcasts!) and it is a good interview!

I also have ANOTHER movie to see! I'm such a documentary slut. :-P

New Horror Fiction Podcast- ooohhhhh...

From SFF Audio:

Podcast 411Rob Walsch, host of the uber-awesome Podcast411, had podcast pioneer Mur Laffery on the show again this week. While Rob and Mur gabbed about Mur's Geek Fu Action Grip podcast and her new show the I Should Be Writing podcast, Mur let slip the juciest nugget of pure goodness Podcast 411 has ever received - in my opinion - Mur said, she and Steve Eley are working on a brand new companion magazine to SFFaudio's favourite ever podcast Escape Pod! The new show will follow a very similar format to the Science Fiction Podcast Magazine, but will be soliciting Horror and presumably "dark fantasy" authors for their short stories instead of SF&F. The new show will be called "Psuedo Pod" or "Psuedopod." The domain (http://pseudopod.org/) is still under construction at this time but we hope to have more details as launch approaches!

HERE's a direct link to the MP3 interview. Skip ahead to the 23:34 mark in the interview to hear the complete announcement.

UPDATE: Steve Eley informs me that PseudoPod will be edited by both Mur Lafferty and Ben Phillips (of the band Painful Reminder) and that the show will be a paying market ($20.00 for short stories) using volunteer narrators. As with Escape Pod it will be "donation-driven" and may start as a Bi-weekly podcast. The first instalment could air as early as July! More details forthcoming.

UPDATE 2: Woops in my excitement over PseudoPod I forgot to mention that Mur Lafferty also told Rob that she's scored a special interview with Neil Gaiman! It will go live sometime soon on her I Should Be Writing podcast. Mur recorded it at the recent Balticon Science Fiction Convention where Gaiman was the Guest Of Honor. Cool!

Hands off the iPod and drive!

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is calling on all Provincial governments to restrict the use of iPods, cell phones and other electronic devices by novice drivers.

"Novice drivers are subject to many restrictions as they learn to drive, such as not driving on four-lane highways and not driving during certain hours," said CAA President David Flewelling. "By also restricting the use of electronic devices, such as cell phones, MP3 players and wireless hand-held devices, they can truly focus on the driving task."

"It is also our hope that a preventative measure like this one will create a generation of motorists who recognize the severe implications of driver distractions - and work towards reducing them where they can."

According to a study released in April 2006 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the many forms of distractions are collectively responsible for as many as eight out of every ten crashes.

"Driver distraction is the greatest unreported traffic safety issue in Canada," said Flewelling. "This is why CAA is also calling on drivers, passengers, employers, automobile manufacturers, and technology developers to reduce or eliminate as many distractions as possible from the driving experience. Driving is not a passive activity - it is a complex task that requires the driver's full attention."

The call is part of the organization's Driven to Distraction campaign.

Oh Canada! I looked at that Driven to Distraction website- and clicked on "Find the Distractions". I am in complete agreement. If I get rid of the kids, and the hoser who can't read the flipping map next to me, I would be able to concentrate on telling my girlfriend on the cell phone how cute the construction worker ahead is.

How cute are these earphones?

And they want them to come in pretty colors too! Though pink is losing the vote. :-(

From Podcasting News:

JAYS, a Swedish company, has developed a Sound Isolating System that it says reduces up to 90 percent of ambient noise, increases battery life on portable products and decreases the risk of "iPod-ears" (hearing impairment).

The d-JAYS earphone system is built around a micro armature that makes it possible to produce the sound inside the ear, generating a better sound quality according to the company.

From Calgary to Halifax, all in one post

Yesterday I think I listened to one of the best episodes of All Axis Radio: Canada yet. I mean, he told a story. A story with music!

Why, I LOVE stories!!!!! It was funny, yet made a very good point at the end. About a topic I wish more people would not be so afraid to look at straight in its ugly face. Because the only way you can deal with an issue like that is head on.

So impressed was I that I rambled on about it in my podcast. (Yes, I do have my own podcast, I'm just being sort of low key about it. But now that I've got 6 episodes under my belt, I'm feeling more and more like coming out of the podcasting closet.)

Got your curiosity up yet?
All Axis #33

Then we head east, where my boyz happen to be on right now at CKDU doing that Sonic Society thang. Tonight I'm told by my fellow Addict Dave (this is awful- I'm NOT listening!) that they are replaying the wonderful Jack and the Beanstalk by Colonial Radio Theatre. If you want to hear this exquisite story, I'd grab the archive for sure!

The podcast however, is another Shadowlands great- Graves Shift, along with an interview with the above mentioned Colonial theatre's Jerry Robbins too!
Sonic Society: Graves Shift

Whew! I tell you- I need to make a listening schedule, and have it on a big board hanging next to my computer. There is just SO MUCH!!!

I will catch up soon, have two little addicts birthday's this weekend, so time will be scarce. But you know where my ears will be!

Attached to my head, of course. ;-)

A podcast for the movie lover

Oooh.. I tell you random feed searches ROCK.

The Film Junk Podcast is a weekly online audio program that you can download in MP3 format and listen to on your computer, iPod or portable media player of choice! Hosted by a rotating cast of Film Junk staff members, the show features funny entertainment news, intelligent movie reviews, and always a little bit of the unexpected.

They even have an open forum Friday- which caught my eye because the topic this week is documentaries. Certainly a podcast worth checking out!

The Addict's Podcast List Part 1

I have this over on the MySpace blog, but then thought what the hell I might as well put it here too. If you've ever found yourself wondering "Just what DOES Dani listen to?"(and I'm sure you all have!), wonder no longer!

Are you funnin' me?

We're finished with another season of Decoder Ring's Red Panda all ready???
I feel like the season just started...

Oh yeah. I listened to 4 of them in a row one day like a month ago. *blush*
So much to listen to.... so I do it in spurts sometimes. :-P

"What does one do when one has seen it all? Done it all? Been to every corner of the former Empire and hunted every quarry known to man? Where does the mighty hunter turn for a challenge? Col. Barker Whistance-Smith, late of his Majesty's service, turns to the wilds of the urban jungle, and his quarry is the new breed of Mystery Man. But when he sets his sights upon The Red Panda, will he learn the folly of hunting... The Deadliest Game?

This is the season one finale of The Red Panda Adventures. Jack and Trixie take over in two weeks for six all-new episodes of Black Jack Justice. The Red Panda Adventures returns with Season Two starting October 7th!

The Long-Awaited Silent Universe Ep. #2

UPDATE: Bravo! I had to go back and listen to the first episode again (which really was NO bother), just to refresh myself on the situation, but you get right back into it instantly.
Man, I hope the next episode doesn't take as long- 4 months then a 17 minute show was like an extended teaser!
But SO worth it...

June 13:
Kay.. I had to double check and make sure I didn't miss an important post like this over at SFF audio- but they didn't post it!!! I've beat them to important sci-fi podcast information???

I will revel in blogger supremacy later.. ;-)

As always seems to happen in life, there were some minor delays, but the long-awaited second episode of Silent Universe is posted and ready for download!

Link to previous entry about this innovative podcast.

Silent Universe Episode 2 - Now Posted!

10 Minutes to Deep ImpactEpisode 2 of the Silent Universe podcast is now available to download. Our fast-paced sci-fi adventure picks up where the previous episode left off, letting us know the fate of Emmeline Kaley and her companion Ben Hernandez. Did they survive the accident? Will SERENDIPITY's risky nuclear plan be successful, or will the 300,000 citizens of Mars pay for their recklessness? Will Gill Frye ever get a clue? The answers to those questions and more all wait inside the latest installment.

This addict has been having a restless night herself, so I will be sure to listen later today... but for now I'm going back to bed. Enjoy!

The Sci Phi Show #16 - Spiderman II and Deontological Ethics

This episode of the Sci Phi Show is looking at the movie Spiderman II and continues to ask the question as to whether or not Spiderman should be spiderman, using deontological ethics as a framework.

LINK

From May 28th:
There's a really good podcast out there, the Sci Phi show. It's short, sweet, to the point, and covers some very interesting ground. Last time it was virtue, and this time is the first of a two-parter about the Spiderman movies and the tragic question, "Does Peter Parker have an obligation to be Spiderman?"

Good spring board for conversations in coffeeshops and internet boards everywhere! ;-)

This story never gets old

Seriously. I've heard "Right Number, Wrong Party" about 20 times now. Rumor has it they are making a shorter version of this premire Shadowlands Theatre mystery... so I know there will be at LEAST one more time I'm going to hear it in my future. :-)

This of course means the Sonic Society podcast is up!

Go... download... play in the shadows.... and don't be startled if your cell phone should ring. ;-)

What's in a name?

Interesting blog entry I found about how the name "podcast" just doesn't fit.

""Podcast" is, when you think about it, an absolutely horrible name for the technology. We don't watch a TVcast, we watch a TV show. We don't listen to a Radiocast, it's a radio show or a radio station. And much of podcast listening isn't even done on an mp3 player, let alone an iPod."

Now, Mark Ramsey makes a good point. However, in the trusty podcasting bible co-written by one of Arizona's finest podcasters Evo Terra, he has a little blurb about the name:

"As with most items that make their way into the conventional lexicon of speech, the precise origins and meaning behind podcasting are somewhat clouded. While the domain podcast.com was originally registered back in 2002 (nothing was ever done with it, as far as we know), and Ben Hammersley suggested that and many other terms in February 2004, it's generally accepted in the podosphere that the first person to use the term as a reference to the activity we now know as podcasting was Dannie Gregoire on 9-15-2004. While some assert the name has connotations to the popular iPod device created by Apple, Dannie didn't have that in mind when the phrase was coined. Regardless of the intentions, the term has been backronymed (that is, treated like an acronym and applied to a variety of plausible existing meanings.) Of all the possibilities, we prefer Personal On-Demand narrowcasting (not broadcasting), which shortens nicely to podcasting. But, of course, you can choose whichever one makes sense to you."

So Ramsey's idea as a possibility: audiomag.

Kay.
Any other suggestions?

Audio addiction takes over college life

Survey: iPods more popular than beer

Move over Bud. College life isn't just about drinking beer. In a rare instance, Apple Computer Inc.'s iconic iPod music player surpassed beer drinking as the most "in" thing among undergraduate college students, according to the latest biannual market research study by Ridgewood, N.J.-based Student Monitor.

Nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were "in" — more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music.

In the year-ago study, only 59 percent of students named the iPod as "in," putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities.

This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, were tied for second most popular, with 71 percent of the students identifying them as "in."

The only other time beer was temporarily dethroned in the 18 years of the survey was in 1997 — by the Internet, said Eric Weil, a managing partner at Student Monitor.

Though beer might soon regain its No. 1 spot, as it quickly did a decade ago, the iPod's popularity is still "a remarkable sign," Weil said. "For those who believe there's an excessive amount of drinking on campus, now there's something else that's common on campuses."

Student Monitor conducted the survey the week of March 6, interviewing full-time undergraduate students at 100 U.S. colleges. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

-- So I'm just gonna assume sex wasn't a choice in this survey... I mean come ON!

Cato Institute Podcast

Oh I have been neglecting my poor audio blog. Bad Dani. You know what I blame.

Giant leeches and colossal robots can only mean...

SCHLOCK!

OMG, did I have a diddy of a time getting the Sonic Society podcast posted today. I had started in the morning, because I knew I would be gone for the afternoon/evening, and I wanted to get it ALL finished and ready to go so all I had to do was post it when I got home this evening.

Sounds easy, n'est pas?

Well, not so easy when you've spent the afternoon in over 100 degree heat swimming. Then trying to race home a 10 mile wall of dust approaching from the south of you. My overactive imagination had thoughts of a certain Stephen King story...

Way-too-long-already story short, I posted it twice, once without the audio file, then had to scramble and delete and re-publish. Because I forgot that I all ready had it all saved to begin with. Yeesh... get the lady a hat, cause she done fried her brain in the sun today...

Anyway, because it's now after 2 in the morning, you can read all the great, inspiring, witty things I said about this particular show HERE.

I still do not get the No Soap Radio joke.

I'm going to bed. Myspace is the devil.

BEYOND TRADITIONAL RECOGNITION
DARK GUARDIAN

WRITTEN BY PETER GREHAN

An archaeological dig on an ancient Roman watchtower in Northern England reveal finds that are almost impossible to accept, and create some unwelcome interest from the authorities.

Centuries earlier, with the Roman Empire still consolidating its conquest of Britannia, Decurion Flavius leads a meagre cavalry force in pursuit of a renegade party of British tribsemen who threaten the same remote watchtower.

As they advance, however, even the weather seems to turn against them, but the enemy they must eventually face proves far more deadly than anything the Roman Empire has ever dealt with before...

If there's a bandwagon...

...she's gonna jump it!

No... wait.

If there's a wagon, she's gonna band it?
Hmm... Oh! I know!

If there's a band, she's gonna jump it!
(um... yeah.)

Oh I know- even better:

If there's a point, she might get to it.

As I was reading Decoder Ring's little blog note today... I saw they created a myspace account. Now, I've been hearing about the evil MySpace.. and how it grabs you and sucks you into it's little world by giving you easy uploading of music and videos...

Then I saw that Colonial Radio has an account too! And I was like, "Jerry??? He's on MySpace? Well shoot if HE'S got one..."

(and if you want to see THEIR pages, you'll just have to go to mine! Neener-neener) ;-P

So I said "f*** it, and tadaaaaa!

I'll probably only use it to direct people this way, but hey networking is networking.

Go.. see... add yourself. Cause I know you've all got pages...

Podtrac Survey: Most People Listen to or View Entire Podcasts

May 30, 2006

Podtrac, a podcasting service provider, today announced it has developed the largest podcasting demographics database worldwide, with over 55,000 detailed demographic profiles, representing more than 22 million U.S. podcast listeners and viewers.

Podtrac also announced the findings from its most recent quarterly survey. According to their survey, over half (56%) of the podcast audience is listening and viewing podcasts on their computers, 46% on a portable device, and the vast majority (88%) listen or view the entire podcast episode.

"Accurate demographics are critical in order to engage advertising agencies and large brands to test market podcast advertising as a component of their media campaigns," said Mark McCrery, CEO and Co-Founder of Podtrac.

Other survey findings include that podcast users are frequent online shoppers (76% shopped online in the past 30 days and 57% spent more than $200 online in the past 12 months). When comparing the survey results with the MRI Survey of the American Consumer, the index figures for the podcast audience is very high.

"Podcast listeners and viewers consistently display high index numbers for income, education and online shopping," said Paul Gold, Vice President of Market Solutions at MRI. "MRI's data in conjunction with Podtrac's survey are proving that the podcasting medium can be an interesting new component of advertising."

The survey also found that podcast awareness continues to grow as 41% of U.S. online adults were aware of term "podcasting" at the end of Q1 2006 versus 32% at the end of Q4 2005.

Now, some who are regulars to this blog have heard me talk about my mini-me addicts-in-training. So naturally you would think the first people I thought would LOVE this would be them.

Nope. I think of my so-close-might-as-well-be- sister's friend Christine, seen here with the addicts-in-training. She doesn't own an iPod.. or any sort of mp3 player, but she would get this for aesthetics alone. Never mind she's 36. You should see her house. It's like my daughter's bedroom- but like the whole house. (Ok not quite that bad... but really almost. She sure likey the pink.)

(Oh I'm SO in trouble. Good thing she is NEVER on the internet.. heheheh.)

And I probably shouldn't show her all the other goodies they have on this site- OMG.
Now, I've got two girls with bdays coming up... oh dear someone hide the credit card!

Batman Fan Fiction

Clyme over at the Voice Acting Alliance tipped me off to some great fan fiction!

Batman: No Man's Land:
A New Batgirl entered onto the scene when Black Mask attacked the Clock Tower (where Oracle lives), Oracle, being the first (and only so far) Batgirl was NOT pleased by this new Vigilante, and she told Batman as much.

Regardless, Batman has teamed up with this new Masked Maiden.

The GCPD or "Blue Boys" have a solid grip on their territory of TriCorner and all the way up to the Clocktower, but now they have TwoFace to the East, and Penguin to the North. Because of this, Gordon has planned an offensive on Penguin. He sent Renee to ask Two Face for help. Something neither of them are comfortable with.

Two Face and Penguin are planning something that involves Bait and choral hydrate, Two Face promised Penguin Batman's Land, if Penguin will lighten up on the northern permiter so Two Face can move West, into the Blue Boys Territory.

They've got 10 episodes up at the link.. I'm downloading as I type. Batman is my favorite superhero... the darker the better. ;-)
