Back in May I first mentioned Final Rune Productions, and their audio play "Day of the Dead" is being featured on the Sonic Society the next two episodes. It's very well-done, and an excellent tribute to the New Orleans that was.

On October 18th, with very little fanfare, a major freaking milestone was achieved. It was on or about that time that we delivered over ONE MILLION podcast downloads. Quite the accomplishment in just over a year, I think...

...At any rate, I’m stoked and you should be, too. Hats off to all of our authors. Without them, this would not have been possible. They rock. And you rock too, ‘cuz it was all y’all that did the downloading. Hell, everyone rocks!

Now, let’s go for a BILLION! (Yes, I’m good at math and sorta kidding. But it’s good to have goals…)

Going Straight To Afterhell

See what happens? I get home and I have no time to blog. The horror I tell you! Well, actually I can't say that, I think my problem is I have too many blogs, because I have been blogging.

Anyway, lots of goodies to tell you about, and they involve the most inclusive show in radio/podcasting. Tonight they go back to an absolute favorite of mine, Afterhell Vol. 2. Long-time readers might remember when I bought this baby back in April... but I have absolutely no problem listening to it over and over again.

A side note, but related: Jamie Lawson, one of the amazing people at Ollin Productions, has succumbed to the call and started her own podcast! "It was 20 years ago today" is exactly about that. A moment in history on the day she podcasts, 20 years earlier. (did that make any sense?). I absolutely LOVE it, and it's a different take on history than you might expect. I'm WAY behind after being away for a week, but they are short 5-6 minute segments, and they really take you back to a time not too many are talking about yet in any detail. Of course, I only have a limited memory of 20 years ago... after all I was uh, 14...

Also, I will just throw in this mass post that episode #4 of Firefly:Old Wounds, is also up on the podcast site and ready for your anxious ear. A slight delay, but well worth the wait, which I'm sure you all ready knew. ;-)

Hmm.. anything else? Nope, I think I covered it all.

I know a couple original people I'd like to mention right now. Last night I shared a beer and numerous munchie finger-foods with Jerry Robbins of Colonial Radio Theatre (all right we each had our own beer). I got PRESENTS!! Yay!!! I picked his mind about radio theatre, and he picked my mind about podcasting. Did I have a recorder? Why, of course not. That would require brain power and actual thinking ahead. It was a wonderful time, and I am honored to have met this writing machine in person. I'm just glad he had a whole two hours to kill!

It was also a nice break from playing Sherpa to my sister and her family. Unfortunately, while here we have had a family emergency, so the stress only continued to build. I won't bore you all with the details, but it leads me to original person number 2. He's a pickle of a guy, and he sent me this video to cheer me when I was up late last night, and thinking, and stressing, as I tend to do... what a doll. And he looked like a... pickle doll...

Hi-ho, S.A.A. Foreign Correspondent here. The Queen Bee asked if I'd keep the lights on if she got too busy with her secret mission to Beantown... Here's a bit of news from the Northern Frontier.

One of the members of our Decoder Ring Theatre ensemble is, in addition to being an actor I've worked with for years, on staff at Space: The Imagination Station (the science fiction cable station here in Canada). Which means when he's not playing roles like "Tom Tommorow, Man of the Future" in The Red Panda Adventures (among many others) Johnathan Llyr gets to do cool things like interview Shatner and Nimoy. At the same time. Jerk.

Space is one of the few traditional media outlets here that seems to "get" the internet. Rather than hide under a bed and hope it goes away, they're trying new things. And since they have access to information above the "internet rumour" level... not to mention cool interviews etc... they're trying out a weekly Podcast version of their Sci-Fi/Fantasy news show Hypaspace with John as host. The first episode is up for your dining and dancing pleasure... by all means give it a spin and send your feedback their way. It's equal parts news and sassmouth, and there's a neat clip of Guillermo del Toro talking about Pan's Labyrinth. I'd like it if it were longer, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, give it a try. You can download it directly from HERE and apparently this is the RSS Feed - though I haven't tried that yet, myself.

Society Withdrawl

Hmm.. I might be going through withdrawl here in Boston. See, most of you know by now I'm dubbed "podcast princess" by my dear friends up in Halifax (which wow- I feel so much closer to them right now- like I could hop a ferry or something!), and I put their podcast together for them each week. Since January, consistantly.

Well, here I sit. Knowing the show is on tomorrow and I have nothing to do. Nothing to prepare. Nothing to edit. And it totally sucks! But I realized how anal I've become about the podcast too- OMG I sent them flipping CODE for the show notes, so they wouldn't have to mess with it (ok and so it would be the way I do them...). LOL! I'm a sick girl... I never knew I had the control freaky gene!

But I did have a point here. I go over to their page to see what's going on, and I'm like, WOW! Jack is turning into his own addict blog! Here's what I found:

New Schlock Audio goodies! (which my sis was telling me today she REALLY likes to hear, and I was just thrilled she listened to SS!)

You don't know how busy you are

Until you find yourself up at midnight at your sister's across the country with nothing to do but scour the internet, and listen to podcasts!

Yes fellow addicts, I'm currently shivering my desert-accustomed patootie off, and it feels like it's only 9. I always love coming to the east coast though, and not just because my sister and her family are here! Today was a BEAUTIFUL day, and I took my nephews apple picking and they wore me out all afternoon! It did make me miss my girls though... :-(

Anyway, LONG flying day yesterday, and it was bumpy and turbulant for most of it, and I HATE HATE HATE to fly. Thank goodness for my podcasts, and the voices of several I can now say I have met in person to keep me company. Here's what got me through the day:

One more cool thing- I wore my Morning Brewcast tshirt on the trip yesterday, and THREE people asked me about it! Is that completely awesome or what? It just tells me that you podcasters out there NEED to get shirts! That is one thing I'm doing when I get home, for sure.

There is plenty more I want to get through this week! I think I'll do some more listening now, since I am still wide awake! More audio bits later!

ONTARIO, California -- Apple Computer's recent legal threats to rivals using the terms "pod" and "podcast" met with giggles and kvetching among podcast entrepreneurs and enthusiasts gathered here to discuss the future of the industry.

Carrying more than a week's worth of sometimes tense online chatter about Apple’s recent letter to Podcast Ready claiming possible trademark infringements, the 2,500 attendees at the 2006 Podcast and Portable Media Expo on Friday alternately complained and laughed about the prospect that the iPod maker might own such seemingly generic words.

Podcast Ready, the tradeshow’s top sponsor and maker of software that allows users to easily synch any mp3 player with any computer, was slapped with a letter from Apple (first made public by Wired News) saying that Apple believes the company’s name and its use of the term "MyPodder" violate Apple’s trademarks.

In the letter, Apple challenges Podcast Ready's efforts to obtain its own trademark, revealing it is pursuing a trademark of its own for "iPod" and "pod." The letter claimed: "The term 'pod' has also been adopted and used extensively in the marketplace by consumers as an abbreviation to refer to Apple’s iPod player. The 'iPod' and 'pod' marks indicate to consumers similar thereto originate from or are sponsored or endorsed by Apple."

The implications are that if Apple succeeded in proving that, all businesses and even hobbyists who use the term could be subject to cease-and-desist letters from Apple.

"Oh, that’s my biggest fear," said Gary Leland, owner of Podcast Pickle, a podcast directory. "I've got my name pretty well established now and I would hate to have to change it. It would be a terrible thing for thousands of podcasters out there. I'm just glad I haven't gotten one of those letters."

Yet the odds of Apple prevailing seems remote to Tricks of the Podcasting Masters co-author Rob Walch. He ranted on a special edition of his Podcast411 program earlier this week that journalists and bloggers were blowing the situation out of proportion. Walch noted that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has put the term "podcast" into its list of generic terms, a move likely to doom anyone who wishes to own it, and that another company actually has owned the trademark "pod" since 1998 as it pertains to digital music.

Walch and others think Apple may have a legitimate complaint in the use of MyPodder, which sounds like "iPod," and that the rest of this is legal posturing to prove they aggressively defend their trademarks. "I think it's bad public relations and you wonder why they're doing this and what's going on," Walch said. "But a lot of things going on in the legal realm are done without logic or common sense."

The issue is actually seen by many as something of a joke, as evidenced by the uproarious laughter that greeted keynote speaker Leo LaPorte's mention of the notion that Apple might own the word "pod."

It’s no laughing matter, though, to Podcast Ready founder and CEO Russell S. Holliman, who has lots of money invested in his Houston-based start-up company's name and says others are playing down the problem. Apple has also sent similar letters to others, including PodGolfFitness.Com, a content provider, iand Mach 5 Products, a Florida-based mom-and-pop business that sells a gizmo they call the Profit Pod that keeps track of profits in arcade and vending machines.

"The letter tells us they want us to stop using our name, to give up our name," Holliman said. "I have this name being printed onto boxes right now as we speak."

Holliman said his team is still contemplating how to respond. Their deadline is Oct. 5, and he's trying to decide whether his young startup can afford to defend against legal action Apple may take, however merited.

LaPorte used the situation to renew his ongoing, admittedly fruitless, quest to change the name of the medium from "podcasting" to something else. LaPorte, host of This Week in Tech and other podcasts, used part of his address to reiterate his belief that the term "podcast" does create confusion among consumers that they can only be played on iPods.

"I know the word is not going to go away," he told the crowd. "Podcasting existed before iTunes. It is not dependent on Apple, it is not dependant on iTunes, it is not dependant the iPod. We need to be clear about that. It is not good for us as podcasters to be this closely associated with Apple."

PME Day Two... and post- expo thoughts

I also neglected to mention two very important ladies who I also met at the expo- Jennifer and Jackie from The Morning BrewCast. I'm a horrible person to neglect two wonderful ladies. One of them is a fellow Pickle Reporter now, too! :-)

You notice how I wrote "PMD" in the sub line from the first day? Man, I was tired! I'm leaving it for my own amusement. I have a link at the bottom to some photos, and there are more coming to be added later.

Day two I got a little later start. Missed the keynotes in the morning, but got to the expo in time to mingle on the floor with a few more peeps, as I was really buying my time until Scott Sigler was over at the podcast book booth autographing the print version of "Earthcore". What a great guy! I told him that I am probably one of the few female listeners he has who heard "Infection", and thinks... AWESOME, rather than, EWWW! He was impressed. ;-)

I also bought another copy of "Podcasting for Dummies" JUST to get Evo and Tee's signatures in it. I took photos of what they wrote- oh yes I am an addict! (Anyone who would like a copy of the book, lemme know- I've got an extra now!!)

After that, I met up with a bunch of sci-fi podcasters and we went and grabbed some lunch. Oh how fun and geeky was that? Completely fun and geeky! Actually it was one of the high points of the expo, because I admire all of their writings so much. Had a good talk about writing reviews, iRivers, microphones, along with lots of laughter. I'm not sure my audio came out on that very well, which will be a total bummer!

I then did one more time around the expo floor, before heading back to my room for a break- a blessed break! Then I headed downstairs to meet up with Charles (Mostly News), Bruce (Zedcast), Andy (AndyCast), Christiana (Nina Kimberly), and Meredith (My Inner Athlete). Meredith also has a podcast called "Dear George: Letters to the President", which I must absolutely check out. It was awesome talking to her about that project- but did I have my recorder on? NOOOO. But I blame that on Charles for bringing me that second beer- I'm such a lightweight! But that is another story for another time.... (sorry about your bag, Ajay!)

There is no way to explain exactly how awesome this weekend was as a whole. I think personally, I am just happy to have found a niche. That niche is podcasting. Everyone there was both a fan, and a mini-celebrity. For one weekend everyone was "star-struck". Yet no one was acting any different than anyone else, so it was just a great time all around. No matter what your podcast is, everyone wanted to hear about it, and we all had that common ground of being podcasters. I mean, where else can you get a range from a Swingers cast, to a Catholic Priest?

One thing I did notice- audio drama/cinema podcasts did not have a huge representation. Yes, podiobooks were. AND there were a few casts there, such as Silent Universe and Dr. Floyd, but overall there needed to be more! So, Sonic Society, Decoder Ring, Texas Radio, Planet Retcon and others- start putting those pennies aside for next year!!! Audio drama must represent!

I also have about 20 new podcasts I'm going to check out, which should give me plenty for my review segments, as well as an excuse to do another list of what I'm listening to!

PMD Day One- oh please let me sleep!

Ha. Well that ain't happening. First off, thank you Ajay (All Axis Radio) for letting me borrow your laptop, and pretending not to hear me grumble about having to figure out a Mac.

So- Thursday afternoon was fairly uneventful until the evening, when everyone had finished trickling in, and trickled to the bar area to see if they could place anyone. What was REALLY funny is that I was recognized before I recognized anyone else. Space case that I am, I finally realized that *I* seem to be the only one brave enough to use a photo of herself as an avatar on the 800 sites I parooze. LOL! But hey, I had podcasters buying me drinks, so I ain't complainin'. ;-)

Today was the first day of the expo. The keynotes were actually quite good, and inspiring, as much as I could be inspired at 9 am on about 3 hours sleep and nursing a latte.

Note to Jack Ward: One of the keynotes was Ron Moore!!! It was totally cool, and I will be very VERY disappointed in you if you read this and have to google who he is. The reason this is important- someone asked a question about him ever starting his own fictional podcast (btw these keynotes will be available as a podcast at a future date), and his answer was if he did, it would be more like an audio play- WHICH HE DIDN'T THINK THERE WERE ANY YET ON PODCAST!!!! Dude- email him!! All of you audio cinema podcasters- show him this medium!!

Dreaming in the Society

This week's Sonic Society is a good one- as we head to Dream Realm Enterprises and a double feature of their anthology, Celena's Dreams. We go from a light fantasy story to a darker realm, and the ending my friends, well, it certainly gave me chills. (And the award for the best audio death this addict has ever heard goes to-).

New Darker Projects: Dark Matter

It pays to have a service like Bloglines. I subscribe to all the new podcast feeds so I can see what's out there.

I tell you, it's slim pickings, if I were to go by title alone. I am really picky when it comes to talk shows, and really that is what most of the new podcasts are- talk shows. And alot of them, I hate to say, are not all that great.

However, when I see a name I know, such as Darker Projects, well, I'm going to click on over and see what's happening.

They have a new sci fi audio series out, and it promises to be a good one! I took a listen to their intro mp3, and I'm certainly intrigued...

The first episode is called, in true sci-fi form, "The Specimen":

Consider the possibilities if earlier experiments by nature had taken hold, and humanity as we know it today had evolved in an entirely different way. In such a world, the notion of what it is to be human would be entirely alien to us, and what is human in our eyes would indeed be a strange...specimen.

I can't wait to take a listen! According to their website it's been out for a month now, so if anyone's listened, leave a comment and tell us what you thought of it!

WiPO- could be very bad for podcasters

This could be really REALLY bad for all of us podcasters out there! In a nutshell-

"If adopted, the WIPO treaty will give broadcasters 50 years of copyright-like control over the content of their broadcasts, even when they have no copyright in what they show. A TV channel broadcasting your Creative Commons-licensed movie could legally demand that no one record or redistribute it—and sue anyone who does. And TV companies could use their new rights to go after TiVo or MythTV for daring to let you skip advertisements or record programs in DRM-free formats."

I have been WAY out of the loop- I first heard about this through Michael and Evo's Wingin' It.

Gearing up for 7th Son Book Two!

Find the world of 7th Son ... in-world

Six months ago, the 7th Son sci-fi podiobook trilogy began: Seven clones were ripped away from their "normal" lives to hunt a ruthless criminal -- the man they were cloned from, the man who masterminded the assassination of the President ... John Alpha.

Listeners met John, Father Thomas, Kilroy 2.0, Michael and the other Beta clones. They watched the conspiracy of John Alpha emerge. It was all a story, it wasn't real.

But for one night ... it will be.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, 7th Son fans can become a part of podcast history. They'll enjoy an exclusive sneak peek of 7th Son, Book Two: Deceit. It's the first-ever launch party for a podcast novel in the online community Second Life, and everyone's invited. Folks can meet author J.C. Hutchins in-world, and listen to interviews about Book Two they won't find anywhere else. Listeners will learn about the upcoming novel, and get hints of the plot twists to come. They'll even get to hear the first chapter of Deceit days before it's released as a podcast.

And they'll see fiction given dimension. In-world, 7th Son fans can step into the memorable "Womb" cloning chamber from Book One: Descent, where the story's heroes were born. Fans can see the clones. They can be a clone. It's a new life, there in Second Life.

The party starts at 7 pm Second Life time (10pm EST, 7pm PST) on Saturday Sept. 23, at the Podcast Island. Podcast Island is the Second Life community of Podcast Pickle. As always, the 7th Son experience won't cost you a dime -- all you need is a Second Life account, available for free at secondlife.com.

Fans joined the Descent. Now they can fight the Deceit. All are encouraged to visit Podcast Island at 7pm SL time on Sept. 23 to experience 7th Son for the first time ... a second time.

7th Son, Book Two: Deceit debuts on Tuesday, Sept. 26th. The story will be available at jchutchins.net and at Podiobooks.com.

Audio coming out of my

ears. Seriously, what were you thinking? I do not even know where to start about all the freaking awesome audio goodness about to break out- and I'm one T-I-R-E-D addict. I've been talking all freaking day into my mic. But more about THAT later. Right now, I have some cool Sonic goodness.

Tomorrow is the Season Premiere of The Sonic Society! I'm so very glad it's here- it has been exactly 20 weeks of re-runs. Tomorrow night 8pm eastern Andrew Dorfman takes the helm, and I think we're in for a pretty good ride. I don't want to give too much away... but Jack, your humble host from last season, had some musings about it on the new Society blog. So tune in- and if you can't tune in, keep your eye on the podcatcher for the podcast to show up!

I then paroozed over to the production company, Sonic Cinema Productions. OK, well, I was looking for something. I knew they were planning on taking Halloween pics- erm, I mean fan pics of the actors in Firefly costumes, and I was hoping they were up so I could tease them.

I didn't find any blackmail pictures, but I did find something better- a little flashback to the Shadowlands days! I love free downloads! Things that begin with Sonic are guaranteed to be good, at least in the radio world. Sonic burgers, well.... ok well I have a small weakness there too. (I know- I'm WEAK!!)

OK, so the way we connect this to why I'm so tired and audio worn out is this. Sonic Society got it's very first syndication in the states- and right in my backyard! Yay! I just have no idea how that possibly could have happened... heheheh. But something very awesome for ME also happened... and if you click here, you will understand why... :-D
