When you really need a Hero...

I first heard the Red Panda series by Decoder Ring Theatre where else? Sonic Society. So much fun and has a perfect nostalgic feel to it, you expect to hear Orson Welles opening each podcast!

You will hear some of the first episodes of Red Panda on the "re-runs" of Sonic Society in their podcast during the summer... but if you're looking for some fresh Panda (ewww.... damn that just sounds bad), head over to Decoder Ring's podcast page and subscribe! NOW! Here is a teaser for their latest episode:

"An ancient killer stalks the city through shadows and fog. Each night
brings new terrors, new victims. With each new dawn there are more
questions, more outrage... and the lingering dread of the darkness to
come. Who dares to hunt the hunter? To bring the light of justice to a metropolis under siege? The city cries out for its champions; but can even the Terrific Twosome of Toronto, The Red Panda and The Flying Squirrel, withstand the fury of... The Shadow Hunter?"

See, you can't stay away now, can ya? ;-)

On a totally unrealted and odd note, my 5 year old came in while I was typing this, and said, quite seriously, "Why isn't there a Blue Panda?"

I just didn't have an answer. Gregg? :-D

Podcast Expo Named Best New Show

Also found in Podcasting News:

Expo Magazine has named the Podcast and Portable Media Expo one of the best new trade shows of 2005.

The magazine's Best New Show award honors the best association, independent, consumer and corporate show launches. The Podcast and Portable Media Expo was recognized as the best new Trade and Consumer Show for 2005.

"Our sales team had to not only show exhibitors why they should take a booth at the show, but also educate them as to what podcasting was in the first place," notes show organizer Tim Bourquin, above right. "When we first started making calls for sponsors and exhibitors, many didn't even know that individual podcasters were buying their products or even what podcasting was."

"Sales calls quickly became educational sessions, so I feel we did a lot to spread the word for the community in that first year," said Bourquin.

"Podcasting is indeed maturing and being recognized by more and more companies and publications as a real medium of communication," he added.

The Expo was held Nov. 11-12, 2005 at a the Ontario Convention Center, Ontario, CA. The event, put on by TNC New Media, had 2,037 attendees, 60 exhibiting companies and had 7,500 paid net square feet.

This year's expo will be September 29th and 30th- The Addict is working on getting there!!

More Podcasts Than Radio Stations In The World

From Podcasting News:

Podcasts Surpass Radio Stations Worldwide; Podcast Demand Growing Faster Than Supply

April 18, 2006

The number of podcasts managed by FeedBurner, a news feed service provider, now exceeds the total number of radio stations in the entire world, according to Rick Klau, FeedBurner's VP of Business Development.

Podcasting is also one of the fastest growing technologies of all time. The number of podcasts feeds managed by FeedBurner is growing 15% per month.
The number of subscribers, though, is growing even faster, at a rate of 20% per month.

According to Klau, "Podcasting is outpacing the speed of adoption of the last 'most successful consumer product launch in history'."

More Podcasts Than Radio Stations in the World

FeedBurner has been seeing 15% growth per month in the number of podcasts that are published:

"FeedBurner recently surpassed a major milestone of 44,000 podcast feeds under management, which, according to the CIA World Factbook, exceeds the total number of radio stations worldwide," notes Klau.

The Podcast Audience is Growing Faster Than the Podosphere

Recent reports of podcasting's death appear to have been premature.

FeedBurner's numbers show podcast circulation growing at bubble-blowing 20% per month. "Today, there are more than 1.6 million aggregate subscribers to FeedBurner-managed podcasts," adds Klau, "and this number has more than doubled in the past six months."

Podcast Adoption Rate Makes it a Successful Technology

Podcasting's adoption rate makes it a success, according to Klau. "Back in 2000, the DVD format, just 3 years old at the time, was declared the most successful product launch in consumer electronics history, outselling the VCR five to one. Using these statistics as a benchmark, in less than two years, the number of podcasts available online is tenfold that of DVD titles in nearly half the time."

It's Not All About iTunes

Some podcasters have started to focus their promotion efforts on iTunes, because of the popularity of Apple's iPods. FeedBurner's numbers, though, suggest that podcasters that focus exclusively on iTunes may be missing out on as much as half of their potential audience.

"Since we recently started tracking podcast downloads within feeds, we've also seen the ratio of downloads to subscribers average 2:1, suggesting a significant secondary market for podcast listenership beyond just the feed's subscribers," according to Klau. This confirms what many podcasters have noted, that they often have many more downloads than they do subscribers.

FeedBurner's numbers reveal "a number of podcast directories generating a sizable amount of traffic" for podcasts," notes Klau. This suggests that getting listed in top podcast directory sites can be a major source of listeners for podcasters.

And, while iTunes is the most popular podcast client, 43% of the subscribers to FeedBurner-managed podcasts use other podcast clients.

Klau's comment's on the expanding podcast universe are posted at Burning Questions, FeedBurner's official weblog.

Podcasting Killed The Radio Star

According to latest figures, it seems people are listening to their MP3 players so much, that radio listening is significantly dropping. According to Bridge Ratings, 27% of people 12-24 attribute their reduced use of radio to MP3 use; 22% attributed it to tired radio programming; 3% attributed it to podcast listening.

According to the firm's latest research:

  • Terrestrial audience erosion to alternative audio entertainment continues to occur in young demographics.
  • Podcasting is beginning to siphon listening.
  • MP3 device usage can consume as much as 80% of a radio user's audio entertainment during initial ownership weeks and months. This number tends to be generally lower among 30+ women and 35+ men.
  • MP3 player fatigue is slowing overall as the market continues to expand due to consumer interest in these devices. Fatigue with MP3 players remains high among those consumers who have owned the devices longer than 6-8 months.
  • Competition for traditional radio time-spent-listening is more severe. Time spent listening to terrestrial radio is fighting for its share of time with a multitude of digital devices. Even television has regained viewership based on this quarter's data. The most often given reason for this by our sample: better programming and new shows. Meanwhile, music-specific radio stations are vying for the attention of their constituencies as MP3 players continue to be more pervasive than ever (75 million sold). Podcasting is beginning to show evidence of cannibalizing radio's time-spent-listening.
  • Satellite radio also suffers from attrition! For the first time, we are seeing satelite radio consumers who have been subscribers for longer than 6 months are actually spending less time than they were six months ago with their satellite service of choice. According to our panel, during the second quarter of 2005 average time spent listening to satellite radio was 16 hours per week. During this most recent study during the period of January 1 through March 31, 2006, weekly TSL for satellite radio among subscribers of 6 months or longer was down to 12.6 weekly hours.

Which I certainly understand. The only radio station I am tuned to is the one that best works with the receiver for my iPod. On the other hand, a recent digital radio study done by Arbitron Inc states that most podcast users and listeners are young and rich, and that radio is in no danger.

Report Highlights:

  • The weekly Internet radio audience has increased 50% over the last year.
  • Nineteen percent of persons age 18-34 have listened to Internet radio in the last week.
  • Satellite radio subscribers are twice as likely to live in 100K+ households
  • Many people are still confused about what podcasts are.
  • Podcasting attracts a relatively youthful audience. More than half of listeners are under 35.
  • 11% of all Americans have listened to audio podcasts. That translates into approximately 27 million Americans that have tried podcasts.
  • More than half of all teens own an iPod or other portable media player.

Podcast Highlights

According to Arbitron, 22% of Americans have heard of podcasting, and 11% have tried podcasts

The Easy Way

Well, now that Sonic Society is on the off-season, I only have to dip into my archives to let you know what's happening! (It's being efficient, not lazy. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!).

It was neat to hear the first episode again, you definitely get an idea of how far they have come in 33 weeks' time.

Enjoy everyone.

Major music labels still too greedy to podcast

Even though people like Ricky Gervais have figured out how to make a "few" extra bucks from podcasting, music labels are still wary. Personally I'd never pay for a podcast of a show I can just set up the DVR or VCR to catch- but that's just me.

However, music companies are staying out of the podcasting fray, because of the free license that comes with the podcast ticket. God/Allah/Buddha forbid someone should share music and spread the word about them THAT way... yeesh.

"To date, the major labels have been reticent to license full-track songs to the podcasting community because podcasts are downloaded files free of digital rights management protection."

However, this just makes plenty of room for the real, non-commercial and original musicians on the independent circuit! (I am sure my buddy Ajay appreciates that one!)

“Podcasts are this big unknown to them,” says Brandon Curtis, vocalist for Reprise act Secret Machines. Tracks from the band’s album “Ten Silver Drops,” due April 25, have been sent to MP3 blogs and leaked to file-sharing sites as part of a pre-release buzz campaign, but not included in podcasts.

“Meanwhile, they’ll license this shit out to ‘The OC’ for pennies,” Curtis says. “Record company people have agendas. The music can go on some ESPN sports highlight program, but it can’t be on a podcast? Whatever.”

When you've got around 9 million people listening to podcasts- I just don't get the greed and ignorance of these music labels and companies. EVERYONE should be on this bandwagon.

Travel as only an audio addict should

UPDATE: Something to keep your pants up!

A guide for traveling with your ears in mind:

1. Make sure you pick a place to stay that will accommodate your every listening need.

-The valet rides a Segway. There's no check-in desk - guests go directly to their rooms. And every room comes with an iPod, pre-filled with guest's favorite music.

2. Bring appropriate clothing.

3. Don't forget the iron.

4. Read up on how to get the most out of your iPod/mp3 player experience when traveling.

The Wait for the End is Over!

I think my boyz* up in Halifax just didn't want it to end! However, due to an entirely separate podcast than what was heard on the radio Tuesday evening, I understand the delay. If you would like info on the broadcast version of the show, scroll down a bit or click here.

For those who DID listen to the show Tuesday, or got the archives, it's like you have an extra original episode to listen to! Texas Radio helps end the season with a special Hans Christian Anderson tale, and you get to hear how the greedy crew of the Albion fare with the conclusion of Shadowlands Theatre's "Ghosts of the Present".

In between, cut from the archives of Tuesday's show and tweaked only slightly for time, we bring the podcast world a treat with a chat between the current host, the future host, and--- an addict with a cold. ;-)

Enjoy! And keep sending your love to Sonic Society in the off-season!

*WTF? What am I a 13-year-old in an IM conversation?

Continuing my descent to Hell

Oh did I squeal like a teen girl when I opened my mailbox yesterday and there was a package from CD BABY waiting for me! My copy of Afterhell: Volume 2 had arrived!!! Now I know how Jack feels when he opens his mail box and gets all the cool audio drama CD's- it really does feel like Christmas!

So, I brought it with me on the drive to drop the kids off at school this morning- and listened to the first story (there are three) on the way home (wha'd ya think? I'd listen WHILE they were in the car?)

Ooooohhhhh.... Joe and Jamie... you two are positively EVIL. Don't EVER change.

You can hear samples of the journey you will be in for at Afterhell's website- and I recommend EVERYONE buy the CD, and while you're at it get Dark Descent too if you haven't heard this awesome, spine-tingling, yet unearthly audiogasm yet!

And the jewel case- why it's magnificant. ;-)

Pick your own pod-venture!

Gregg Taylor at Decoder Ring Theatre tipped me off to this cool podcasting gem. At the end of each track of the story, you are given two options on what the characters can do, and you skip to the appropriate track number.

45 minutes later and I'm still messing around with this thing- how great!

The entire site is full of great information and fun- happy surfing!

Enjoy!

Podcast Link

Eek! It's the next-to-last episode of Sonic Society this season! Though I'm not sure what the radio plan is, I do know that the podcast will not be interrupted, as they are going to go back ALLLL the way back to episode number one, and remind all of us addicts about the awesome radio drama we have listened to starting 32 weeks ago! If I remember correctly, I believe the first episode was "Soul Patrol", so that will be fun to listen to again.

But for tonight, we FINALLY get to hear the conclusion of "Dark Descent", the first story in the Afterhell series by Ollin Productions. Thank GOD- what a longass week of waiting! ;-)

So dark and evil is this decent, that I will have no choice but to pack up the family and balance it out... that's right friends, we're going to Disneyland for the weekend.

Though I guess you could say I'm descending into my own hell after all...

Audio Dramas Wanted!

From the Radio Drama Digest...

We just shipped our 3rd issue of *Smitemaster's Selection*, a magazine
on CD for players of our computer games.

It included a 30-minute episode from Holodio Theatre's excellent
*Shadowman Saga*, and I'm looking for more great content to go onto the
4th issue which will ship in May. Our computer games feature a fair
amount of voice acting and storytelling which is appreciated by
players,
and it is my personal mission to get them all hooked on audio drama.
To
that end, I am asking for productions that fit the following criteria:

* audio drama in science fiction or fantasy genre
* tells a story, with a focus on events
* any length is okay, but prefer 30 minutes or longer
* episodic content strongly encouraged
* no graphic violence, strong language, or explicit sex
* you must have complete distribution rights

We pay a semi-professional rate based on the length of the content you
license to us--$30 for 30 minutes. We'll send you a free copy of the
issue's CD that contains your work, and there are promotional
opportunities such as mentioning you in our newsletter, website, and
press releases.

If you are interested, please submit a piece that fits the above
criteria for me to review. Any submitted pieces will be used for
review
purposes only until you have signed a licensing agreement. Ways to
submit a piece:

* E-mail me with a link to your piece that is hosted on a website.
* E-mail me with a file attached (MP3, MP4, OGG, ZIP containing WAV)
that is 10mb or less in size.
* E-mail me and ask for my address to mail a CD.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Partner, Caravel Games, LLC

--How cool is that? Time for all you audio drama producers to start looking through your past productions and maybe get a little cash! ;-)

Join me in Hell

UPDATE 3: The podcast is up! Go download it NOW and see why I've been raving about this show to everyone I know (and don't know) all day today!!

LINK TO SHOW

UPDATE 2:
Oh Dammit! I cannot believe I have to wait an entire week for the second half of Dark Descent! AAHHHHHHH!
I have absolutely no self control, I may have to buy a copy and get it overnighted to me because I do not know how I will be able to wait!

UPDATE: OMFG! I am 10 minutes into the show and I had to come here and make a quick note about how f***ing AWESOME this thing is so far!

Oh wow. You know, I have GOT to get more on top of what is happening on my main addiction. Talk about one click leading to many other clicks and discoveries.

So I find an entire site devoted to Afterhell, and what do you know there's a blog. I like blogs, if you haven't figured that one out yet. I'm always expecting a mention of the Sonic Society, but I always get extra-giggly when I see the Addict Blog mentioned too! (Some would argue that I am ALWAYS giggly, but if you talk to Mr. Audio Addict you might get a different take on that.)

The best part of this discovery is now I know who Jamie is! Yay! Thank you for joining the Addict map!
I also know who the shy one is... ahem.

Can't wait to hear part one of Afterhell tonight... it seems like my kind of audio experience.

8pm Eastern (Note to self: Time change! Must get pizza hour earlier!)

Beyond Traditional Recognition

New and Original goodies from BTR Productions!

BEYOND TRADITIONAL RECOGNITION: ICE BY WITOLD TIETZE AND CHRISTOPHER SMITH

In the high-stakes world of corporate technology, ruthlessness and discovery go hand in hand. Elijah Stoker, industrial scientist, understands this, but he never thought he'd end up on the receiving end. Stoker's time is running out faster than he can count it -- literally -- and it seems his work at renowned industrial firm Ionix may have something to do with it. Friend and co-worker Trent Greene can't work it out either, but he's got some nasty theories.

Prudence Rhett, too, knows what it means to knock the competition about, to give them hell and not look back. This much she has to do in order to sell a revolutionary new device that will lead to a telekinetic revolution.

But she has to look back this time. In her desire to get ahead, she has taken on some unwanted baggage. And its name is Elijah Stoker.

Yes, we are listening

...to podcasts! According to the British Market Research Bureau, a quarter of all adult internet users will listen to a podcast in the next 6 months.

That's like- 8 million people!! Holy RSS feed, Batman!

Naturally, mp3 players are a hit with the younger set (hell my 8 year-old wants one for her bday), and those who have an mp3 player are more likely to download a podcast (kind of a given methinks).

Purchasing music through iTunes isn't all that either... and the younger show less chance of doing that than the older set (which makes sense since the teens most likely would have to swipe Mom's credit card to purchase anything).

Anywho- interesting survey, take a look-see.
~Dani

Podcasting becoming political

It was only a matter of time before politicians started to understand the power of podcasting. (They *would* be the last to catch on, ahem). And it didn't take long for someone to market the digital audio landscape TO the politicians...

podcast production

Our team of marketing and technology experts can create, produce and distribute audio and video files for your candidate. Here's how it works..

Let VoterBlast help you produce audio and video podcasts that produce results and allow voters to continue to hear the message again and again. Call us today!

A good idea... but we can only hope that perhaps politicians will realize that they have the means to do this all ready, and the brain power as well right in their own staff.. or possibly even in themselves.

Hmm... :-)

Making another ad-pearance

Wanna mess with your head? Better yet- wanna mess with other people's heads? Then listen to yet another addiction of mine- Shrink Rap Radio! Dr. Dave and his mind-full of information first came across my path in a post on the network I run on Ryze... and I've been my own psyche major ever since.

So much so I ended up doing a little promo for Sonic Society for the good Dr.'s podcast too.. my-oh-my does my voice get around lately! I close out episode #30- take a listen (to the whole show of course), and you will soon see why I am out of my mind about this podcast!

Shrink Rap Radio- Freud tested, Addict approved. ;-)

Foolish April Fool's Day

It all started out well enough. Had the sitter bribed and booked for the night, convinced Mr. Audio Addict to come along for the ride...

Then the rattle in the car began... and we saw the trail of fluid. Seems the April Fool gods did not want me to attend Coyote Radio's Fool's Fest this year- and they blew my water pump just to make sure. :-(

I AM SO BUMMED OUT!!! Now, I am not the most organized person in this world, but you know I'm excited about something when I actually print a map, and call to find out how traffic will be on the drive up so I could figure out the best time to leave.

I AM SO BUMMED OUT!!! Yes I know I said that all ready. But LOOK at all the fun they had!
And I was SO looking forward to trying for the prestigious title of Queen! However, it looks like this royal pair proved themselves worthy of their titles. :-)

To Coyote Radio- I am SO happy that your fund raiser was a success, and I look forward to hearing clips from the evening!!!

~(a very bummed) Dani
